2023 Texas Rangers - Entire Season

BringInTheLefty

Well-Known Member
the 2023 season officially started this afternoon as we announced an old fart as our new manager
Bruce Bochy did the dog & pony show & CY read the script as why Bruce is the right person to lead our franchise to the “promised land”

we are in the midst of 6 consecutive losing seasons & our starting pitching SUCKS
Martin Perez’s negotiations are stalled & he’s now 30% to comeback to our team

if/when we sign anyone I’ll add to this thread

Carlos Rodón, Chris Bassitt & Edwin Díaz are all on our “must have” list

Here's what I'm telling myself:

They need an experienced skipper because they're going to get a bunch of talent over the winter and they need someone to get them gelled quickly so they're ready for the playoffs this time next year!

you’ve got very high hopes sir
unless we sign minimum 2 quality starters & bring back Marty then the playoffs are a long long long way off…

we have extended Martín Pérez a one year
$19.65 million qualifying offer on Thursday
the deadline to accept the offer is Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT

we’ve also made a few interesting moves

traded Nick Solak to the Reds for cash considerations

we have acquired Jake Odorizzi from the Braves for cash considerations and Kolby Allard
Odorizzi went 6-6 with a 4.40 ERA in 2022
they hope he will be the # 4 starter next year

can’t believe it but we exercised the $6 million dollar option with Jose Leclerc for 2023 he has a $6.25 million option for 2024

as expected we declined Kole Calhoun’s $5.5 million dollar option and he becomes a free agent

Martín Pérez has accepted the qualifying offer and will return to the club in 2023
I fully expect a 3 year contract will be worked out before christmas

we signed our pitching coach on wednesday
I’m not a fan of his at all, but Mike Maddux is the choice

he was with us when Ron Washington was our manager (2009-2015)
he’s been with the cards for the last five seasons

we also signed Dayton Moore as our senior baseball advisor

Jacob deGrom has signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers

I have very mixed feelings on this

Trepidation is the word I'll use. I foresee flashes of unhittable brilliance, followed by extended stints on the IR, followed by a ballooned era--all before the all-star break ;)

exactly, we could get 6-8 great starts then season ending surgery

my only hope now would be if we try and get rid of Semien’s awful deal somehow someway

Andrew Heaney is on his way to Globe Life
we have given him a two year deal worth $25 million with a opt out after the 2023 season
many incentives that could earn him another $15 million

he pitched only 72.2 innings in 2022
but if he stays healthy would be a very nice #3 starter

our possible opening day rotation:

deGrom
Perez
Heaney
Gray
Odorizzi

looks much better than last year but is loaded with MANY ????marks

can deGrom,Gray and Heaney stay healthy
will Perez regress from last years breakout season

we are down to 31 days until pitchers & catchers report

here is some reality for those few Ranger fans….

our three “studs” we signed
Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, and Andrew Heaney, they combined for only 246 innings last year
Martin Perez had his best year by far will he bounce this year????
Our bullpen is below average
our offense gets plenty of praise, but they finished 19th in OPS last season and didn’t add anyone

a ton of question marks with this team
we could win 85-88 games or we could win 70-73

tremendo!!!! I do tail you SIR and will, love your style and love m.l.b. let's have a great 2023!!!

POTENTIAL Opening Day Lineup & Roster

Starting Pitchers:
Jacob deGrom
Martin Perez
Nathan Evaldi
Andrew Heaney
Jon Gray
Jake Odorizzi

quite an improvement from last year, but SO many question marks
Can Jacob,Andrew,Nathan & Jon all stay healthy and give us minimum 160+ innings?
most likely no…

1B: Nate Lowe IMO he was our MVP last year, will he bounce or improve?
I say improve

2B: Marcus Semien got off to a awful start but came on strong
will be our lead off hitter 90% of the time

SS: Corey Seager had way too many errors and his batting avg was only .245
he did hit a career high 33 HR’s

3B: Josh Jung
unlike others I don’t think highly of him at all
I see him back in the minors by Memorial Day
Josh Smith is a solid 3B but his bat is a huge liability

OF:
Leody Taveras
Adolis García
Bubba Thompson
Ezequiel Duran

we have a huge question mark as who will be our everyday left fielder
Leody & Adolis are fine as everyday players

C:
Mitch Garver
Jonah Heim

Garver coming off of surgery
I really like Heim as do the pitchers, if he can hit I’d say he will be our #1 backstop for most the season

Bullpen:
Dane Dunning
Taylor Hearn
Jonathan Hernández
José Leclerc
Glenn Otto
Joe Barlow
Brock Burke

Hearn was very good as our long inning man
Leclerc most likely will be our closer but I strongly feel he’s complete dog shit
The rest of our arms are a bunch of average Joe’s
We REALLY need to find two new arms or else we will lost many 1 run games once again

DH:
Mark Mathias
Garver will get AB’s if he can stay healthy

BENCH:
Josh Smith
Brad Miller

Miller had a injury plagued 2022
Josh has all star defensive skills at many positions, his problem is his bat
to stay with the team he needs to hit at least .245
I hope he can do it

My 2023 Outlook:
our over/under is set at 82.5 wins
my gut feeling is a big bet on the UNDER
due to our starters with so many question marks
our pen is subpar & we have ? marks at 3B & LF
our offense was 19th in OPS last season and we didn’t add anyone of significance to improve it

I’m saying we will have many key injuries and our record will be 74-88 or worse
I truly would like to be wrong but I wouldn’t ever consider buying any playoff tickets

Mentioned this last year several times, I think you should expect a monster year from Seager. I bet the home runs remain around 30 and he hits .300 or above. The 1st year when you get the bag for a new team is so difficult, moving your family, getting used to new environment/routine, pressure of wanting to show why you got the bag. So many things work against guys their 1st season on a new team expected to be the man. We saw it with Goldsmidt who was consistently fantastic his whole career in zona. We got flashes of that guy but he was very steaky/inconsistent, a shell of his career in zona. Now he coming off a MVP season!! If goldy can struggle with it anyone can. Seager primed to have a incredible year imo. The average will skyrocket back up, not just because of settling in w his new home but the dismantling of the shift is gonna enhance a lot of guys averages imo. I think he will be in the top 7-8 of mvp voting.

Giving degrom the money and years a super risky proposition. Guys injury history well documented and he wasn’t the same dominant guy when he did pitch last year. I hope it turns out to be a home run signing for ya’ll but it feels like a coin flip at best that it works out. The fact Mets looked at a 40something JV as a upgrade has to be worrisome! Obviously the years/money had something to do with it but it was mostly the fact they couldn’t trust degrom, if they could they wouldn’t have let him out the door,

I think Perez will give basically the same type of effort. I’m a fan of Jon Grey and Heaney but again health a huge concern w him, handing out big money to so many pitchers with questionable injury history is scary! If they forced to rely on Oddrizzi for innings that a problem imo, coming back to AL feels like he could get blown up in a lot of starts, hopefully he not needed for more than 10-15 full in spot starts!

That pen is not a who’s who of guys that strike fear, teams are not gonna feel out of games trailing late!

Even if everything breaks right I can’t see them being better than 3rd in the west, Astros the obvious favs but I think this is Seattle’s time! Luckily there still the angels and A’s to pick on. Dunno what halo’s have done but I assume their pitching still stinks as it always does!! Oakland won’t stay down long then rangers back to bottom feeders if these pitching contracts don’t work out. I mean at least they appear to be trying, lot of franchises would kill for that!

83.5 a pretty massive jump from the 63 or so posted last year. They did clear the 63.5 by winning 68 games. Can they really add 16 more wins? If the rotation healthy no doubt, seems like a really big gamble tho. Don’t see how ya play anything other than under.

I’ve bet the under

Makes sense. Especially with seattle I think about to make a big jump. Dunno if laa be any better cause far as I know their pitching still stinks, don’t know anything bout them this year but I assume Oakland will be more competitive.
Oakland season win total is 59.5.
Ive asked my bay area A’s friends and they think that number is spot on. That’s how bad its gotten in Oakland.

in a surprising move we traded Mark Mathias to the Pirates we got back Ricky DeVito a 8th round pick in the 2019 draft

Mathias for some unknown reason wasn’t treated right by CY and his minions
they love Robbie Grossman
I thought CY and his crew would be more objective but they are the same old same old

I’m really happy this will be my final year

POTENTIAL Opening Day Lineup & Roster
quite a few changes since I posted this on 2/13/2023

Starting Pitchers:
Jacob deGrom
Martin Perez
Nathan Eovaldi
Andrew Heaney
Jon Gray
Jake Odorizzi

Jake seems to be on course now
Eovaldi most likely will start the season on the DL
Heaney so far staying healthy
Gray looks better
Perez pitching the Classic

1B: Nate Lowe
2B: Marcus Semien
SS: Corey Seager
3B: Josh Jung
I still see him back in the minors by Memorial Day

OF:
Leody Taveras -injured
Adolis García
Bubba Thompson - should be opening day CF until Taveras back
Ezequiel Duran
Robbie Grossman - CY loves him and will stick with him for a long time

C:
Mitch Garver
Jonah Heim

Bullpen:
Dane Dunning
Taylor Hearn
Jonathan Hernández
José Leclerc - had some neck issues
Glenn Otto
Joe Barlow
Brock Burke

DH:
Grossman
Garver will get AB’s if he can stay healthy

BENCH:
Josh Smith
Brad Miller

Josh has every chance to make the club still because he plays so many positions well

with less than two weeks until opening day the team is now just hoping everyone stays healthy

final roster is just about set, the 2023 Rangers on paper look to be a very competitive team BUT filled with so many ???? marks

Our starting pitching will make or break this team
can Jake give us 170+ innings
will Heaney,Gray & Eovaldi give us 100+ innings

our pen is at best sub par
we have no stud closer just a group of average Joes

I’m still sold on us winning between 72-76 games
I really hope to be wrong but I’ve got to look at reality 4 of our 5 starters could all be on the DL before the first of May…

2023 Opening Day Lineup**

1: Semien 2B
2; Seager SS
3: Lowe 1B
4: Garcia RF
5: Grossman LF
6: Jung 3B
7: Thompson CF
8: Garver C
9: Jankowski DH
SP: Jake

**let’s see how accurate my lineup is

Bruce Bocci Ball told everyone on Friday that Jake would be our opening day starter to NO one’s surprise

Jake will be our 14th DIFFERENT opening day starter since 2010
Kevin Millwood was our last consecutive opening day starter 2006-2009

Jake has not pitched a full mlb season since 2019
he’s on a pitch count of 70, so look for Hearn in the 4th or 5th inning

Away we go @BringInTheLefty

I'm going on record that we're going to sneak in to a wild card spot. I reserve the right to alter my opinion in June when our injured reserve list is as long as my arm, but for now, Jared & Matt on the call and the air is full of hope. Maybe a hot start will help Eric Nadel battle his demons.
Enjoy the season buddy.

I’ll let you rescind your post season comment
Our offense vs a quality pitcher SUCKS
As I type this we are losing 3-0 in the third
At best we are a 72 game winner this year

Game 1 RECAP:

That extremely loud fart sound was Jake getting torched in his 3.2 innings of “work”
We were down 5-0 heading to the bottom of the 4th
In the bottom of the fourth we put up a 9 spot and held on to win 11-7

deGrom

While it’s nice to win opening day, Jake got torched
Our offense was very good
Jung didn’t get a hit
Grossman hit a huge 3 run blast
A day off tomorrow and we are back at it Friday night

Our offense erupted yet again, final score was 16-3 our record stands at 2-0

Eovaldi was serviceable going 5.0 innings giving up 6 hits 3 runs all earned walked 2 struck out 6

Dunning & Hearn combined to throw 4 scoreless innings

His first & second of the year

B Miller 1-3

Duran 0-1

went 7-16 with RISP and left 10 on base

we’ve scored 27 runs in our first two games and we’ve beaten two good SP’s
It’s a nice start BUT let’s see how we do vs the Orioles as they come to town on Monday

Perez takes to the mound tomorrow night…

I can count the number of times we've been on SNB in the last decade on one hand...now we're on the season debut. Going for a series sweep, no less. Going to be a lotta smoke blown up our asses, negating our 'nobody believes in us' card.

We're shaping up to be the flavor of April and downhill from there.

Should be a heck of a offensive series the way both swinging the bats and back the rotation starters. Smacking Nola and wheeler around was super impressive to me.

Surprise,Surprise,Surprise (Gomer Pyle reference)
The Texas Rangers have started the season 3-0
This isn’t a typo
We swept the Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball by the final score of 2-1

Perez (1-0) didn’t have his “A” stuff but gutted out 5.2 innings giving up 8 hits
1 run which was earned
walked 3 and struck out 7
Burke, Hernandez and Smith combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings
Smith got his first save

Josh Jung went 1-3 and drove in 1
he hit his 1st HR of the season a solo shot
batting .182

Semien 2-4 drove in 1 .357

Seager 2-4 .364

Duran,Garver and Grossman all went 1-3

Garcia,Heim and Lowe all went hitless

went 1/6 with RISP and left 4 on base

in this series our defense was stellar not one error was commited

we struck out 26 times, 12 of those came in Saturdays game

only three teams are undefeated, Rangers, Rays and Twins
Are we better than last year???
Could be, let’s see what happens after the Orioles series

Gray takes to the hill tomorrow night…

That loud THUD y’all heard was called reality
Rangers got man handled by the Orioles tonight, final score was 2-0
Our record is now 3-1

Gray (L 0-1) actually pitched a solid 6.1 innings but the long ball was his enemy
he gave up 2 solo shots
he allowed 4 hits 2 runs both were earned
walked 2 struck out 7

Ragans & Kennedy threw 2.2 scoreless innings

Our 1-4 batters went 0-16
Garcia,Lowe,Seagar and Semien

Jung 1-3 he got our only hit of the game .214

Heim & Miller both went 0-3

Duran & Grossman each went 0-2

went 0-3 with RISP and left 4 on base
we struck out 7 times

Orioles are a up and coming team, we will have to play extremely well to beat them once in this series

Heaney gets the ball tomorrow night…

Heaney had absolutely nothing and we got rocked
Final Score was Orioles 7-2 our record is now 3-2

Heaney (L 0-1) 2.2 innings gave up 7 hits and 7 runs all of them earned
Walked 2 struck out 2 and gave up 2 HRs

Dunning was very good throwing 4 scoreless innings

Duran 0-3

Garver 1-3

Miller 1-2

Seager 1-4

we struck out 8 times and went 0-2 with RISP and left 4 on base

Duran committed our first error of the season

Josh Smith fortunately has no concussion or broken bones in his face
he did get 6 stitches, will be evaluated tomorrow and then a decision will be made if he needs to go on the DL

Jake takes to the hill tomorrow afternoon to try and avoid getting swept
Will be interesting to see if he rebounds from his opening day ass beating

we had a 2-0 lead Orioles rallied to tie it up then Josh Jung hit a two run HR we went on to win 5-2 our record is now 4-2

Jake threw 92 pitches over his 6 innings
he gave up 2 runs only 1 was earned
walked 2 struck out 11
it was a vast improvement from start #1 and very surprised he was allowed to throw 92 pitches

Smith,Hernandez & Leclerc combined for 3 scoreless innings
I hate to write this but through our first 6 games our pen has been spectacular

Jung 2-5 drove in 3 Josh hit his 2nd HR of the year a two run shot BA .318

Garcia 2-4 drove in 1 BA .348

Lowe 1-4 drove in 1 BA .240

Seager 0-4 BA .217

Garver & Grossman both 1-4

Semien 1-3 BA .240

Heim 0-3 BA .154

Duran 1-3 BA .167

day off tomorrow as we get ready for a very brief 3 game road trip to Chicago to play the Cubbies then back home Monday to face the Royals

Houston we have a problem…
Our “banging” offense was extremely offensive today
The Cubbies shut us out 2-0 dropping our record to 4-3
We’ve scored 7 runs over our last 4 games and we’ve been shutout in 2 of these 4 games

Eovaldi (L 1-1) tough loss
he threw 5.2 innings gave up 5 hits 2 runs both earned, walked 1 struck out 6

Ragans & Kennedy threw 2.1 scoreless innings

Semien went 0-4 he’s now 1 for his last 15
batting .204

Seager 1-2

Lowe 1-4

Garcia 0-3

Jung 0-4

Grossman 0-4

Garver 0-3

Miller 0-3

Josh Smith 1-2

struck out 11 times, went 0-5 with RISP and left 6 on base

to me this was a VERY disappointing loss, these are the games we are supposed to win
will be interesting to see if they bounce back tomorrow

Blown out in the Windy City, final score Cubbies win 10-3
Our record is now 4-4, we’ve lost 4 of our last 5 games after a 3-0 start
We commited 5 errors, yes 5

Marty (L 1-1) threw 5 innings gave up 5 hits 3 runs 2 of those earned walked none struck out 5 and gave up a solo HR

Burke and Dunning combined to throw a scoreless inning

Kennedy 0.1 gave up 2 hits 2 runs 1 was earned

Hearn got completely torched in his 1.2 innings he gave up 5 hits 4 runs all earned
walked 1 struck out 2 and he gave up a solo HR

Semien 1-5 BA .206
he commited 1 error

Seager 2-4 BA .276
he committed 2 errors

Garcia 0-4 BA .267
he committed 1 error

Heim 1-4 BA .176
he commited 1 error

Lowe 2-4 drove in 2 BA .273

Jung 1-4 drove in 1 BA .267

Grossman,Garver,Duran and Josh Smith all went hitless

we struck out 6 times and went 3-14 with RISP and left 10 on base

It’s hard to say anything positive about todays game and funny how the “tone” has changed since the 3-0 start

Grossman is 1-18 this week

Gray takes to the hill tomorrow to avoid the sweep
This team needs a swift kick in the balls ASAP…

Our offense woke up today and we win rather easily, final score was 8-2
Our record is now 5-4

Gray (W 1-1) was good he threw 5.2 innings, giving up 6 hits 2 runs both earned walked 3 struck out 4
He did give up a 2 run HR

Smith,Ragans & Leclerc all threw scoreless innings

Semien 2-5 drove in 3
Seager 1-4 drove in 1
Jankowski 1-3 drove in 1
Thompson 2-4 drove in 2
Heim 2-4
Josh Smith 1-4
Jung 0-5
Lowe 1-5
Garcia 0-5

We went 4-16 with RISP and left 6 on base
We struck out 10 times

The Royals head to Globe Life tomorrow for a three game series
Heaney gets the ball and he REALLY needs to do better than his first start…

Bolstered by a seven run sixth inning we go on to an easy 11-2 win
Our record is now 6-4

Heaney (W 1-1) went 5.0 innings threw 93 pitches gave up 2 hits 1 run which was not earned walked 2 struck out 10
He did record nine consecutive strikeouts from the first to fourth innings
By doing this he passed Nolan Ryan in the Rangers’ record books for most consecutive strikeouts in a single game Ryan had seven on July 7, 1991 vs. the California Angels

Dunning threw 2 scoreless innings

Burke threw 2 innings and gave up 1 run

Garcia went 1-5 drove in 4
his only hit was a big one, his 2nd HR of the season a grand slam

Seager went 3-4 drove in 2
he hit his 1st HR of the year a solo shot

Jankowski went 2-3 drove in 2

Heim went 2-3 drove in 1
he hit his 1st HR a solo shot

Bubba Thompson went 1-4 drove in 1

Lowe 1-3 drove in 1

we struck out 6 times, went 5-11 with RISP and left 5 on base
while it was a nice win the Royals are an awful team and these are teams we must beat to have a decent season

Jake gets the ball tonight, IF he’s the Jake of the past this is the team he could no hit

these 3 correct scores would be worth a bet

Rangers 4-0 +2200
Rangers 5-0 +2800
Rangers 7-0 +3000

Our first walk off win off the season, final score 8-5 bringing our record to 7-4
We wasted a good start by Jake costing him a W but bottom line is the team won a game that last year we’d have lost

Corey Seager left the game in the 5th with a left hamstring issue & I’m 95% sure he’s heading to the DL
Luckily we have Josh Smith who plays SS exceptional

Jake threw 98 pitches over 7 innings
he gave up 7 hits 2 runs both were earned
walked none and struck out 9

Hernandez & W Smith each gave up 1 run

Leclerc blew the save for the first time this season

Ragans (W 2-0) pitched 0.2 and got the win he didn’t allow any hits

Jonah Heim went 1-5 but his only hit was a walk off 3 run HR
it was his second HR of the season

Garcia 1-4 drove in 2 .227

Semien 2-5 drove in 1 .229

Lowe 1-5 drove in 1 .261

B Miller 1-2 drove in 1

Jung 2-3 .263

Jankowski 0-4

Bubba Thompson 0-4

Eovaldi takes to the hill tonight to go for the sweep
We’re off tomorrow then we head to Houston for a weekend series

It’s nice to be 7-4 but we’ve achieved this record by beating a lot of bad teams
Let’s see what happens when we play the Astros,Yankees this week and the end of the month

Whelp it’s now offical Seager is heading to the DL for minimum 4 weeks
We will be lucky if we see him back the All Star game

It’s now time to see Josh Smith do his thing & Ezequiel Duran

That sucks. I’d ask what happened but I’m sure I can read back a little and find it? If so no need to repeat yourself.
