Preseason Defections/Suspensions/Injuries

VT will be without two players believed to be starters at the CB position. JUCO Jeremy Webb is out with an achilles injury and Adonis Alexander with 15 career starts is academically ineligible. Hokies are already replacing two 2017 SR CBs in Greg Stroman and Brandon Facyson. In the spring Foster had believed they would still be comfortable with one-on-one DB play. Without Webb and Alexander?

Additionally nickle DB/S/LB Mook Reynolds and his 26 career starts was dismissed. He was the second leading returning tackler.

Ofcourse they were already replacing the Edmunds brothers.

Hokies have some work to do on this D.

Alabama LB Terrell Lewis tears ACL.

excerpt:

Lewis was expected to be one of the defensive linchpins this season, and his elevated status on the team was reinforced by Alabama's sports information staff, which made him available to the media multiple times this spring.

He stepped into the spotlight in place of Anfernee Jennings, the outside linebacker who was sidelined during the team's 15 off-season practices as he recovered from his own major knee injury.

But now Lewis is gone again.

And defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi will have to make do without him, relying on the likes of Christian Miller, Chris Allen, Jamey Mosley and perhaps even Jarez Parks -- all of whom are capable players in a linebacker corps that should remain one the team's strongest units.

But each of them will have a hard time measuring up to Lewis.

They don't have his raw talent.

And they don't induce the same level of excitement Lewis did.

Alabama reserve LB VanDarius Cowan kicked off team:

excerpt

After being charged with assault for a bar incident, Alabama sophomore linebacker VanDarius Cowan was dismissed from the program Monday (July 9) by head coach Nick Saban.

Saban said Cowan, who appeared in seven games as a true freshman last season, was tossed because of a "violation of team rules." Cowan missed part of spring practice because of academic issues.

Western Michigan All-MAC CB Sam Beal was taken in the NFL supplemental draft after he failed to meet academic eligibility requirements.

excerpt

KALAMAZOO, MI - After a strong junior year, Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal positioned himself to be a leader in the Broncos' secondary this season.

WalterFootball.com projected Beal as the No. 2 cornerback in the 2019 draft, after the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Grand Rapids native finished the 2017 season with 26 tackles (3 for loss), 10 pass breakups, one forced fumble and two interceptions, one of which came against No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold in the Week 1 game at USC.

Wyoming LB Cassh Maluia suspended 1 game (New Mexico St)

Maluia started every game at weak-side linebacker for the Cowboys in 2017 and remains the starter heading into this season. Rising sophomore Ryan Gatoloai-Faupula is listed as his backup.

In other WYO Cowboy news:

leading rusher RB Trey Woods expected to miss the season

Woods emerged as the Cowboys’ leading rusher last season, averaging 3.5 per carry and 41.1 yards per game. Woods missed the majority of spring camp with the shoulder injury. He finished the spring season as a co-starter with returning junior Kellan Overstreet, who also missed much of camp with a shoulder injury, and rising senior Nico Evans. Woods started at running back for the majority of the 2017 season after spending fall camp at linebacker. He was recruited out of Oregon as an athlete.

reserve DL Javaree Jackson also expected to miss the season

Jackson played in 11 games and started in one to accumulate 24 total tackles. His role became more significant in 2017 as Wyoming suffered numerous injuries to its interior defensive line. Jackson, a Wisconsin native, had been listed as the third nose tackle on the depth chart after the spring season.

reserve WR Milo Hall has transfered

2x All-MWC Hawaii LB Jahlani Tavai was arrested in June with along with reserve RB. No word on any action taken by the team.

Oregon State LB Bright Ugwoegbu has left the program (was suspended since spring). He had 20 career starts.

SMiss QB Keon Howard leaves Southern Miss

Howard started seven games at quarterback in 2017, throwing for 1,199 yards and eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He completed 56.5 percent of his passes and ran for 181 yards.

Howard split time with Kwadra Griggs, who also returned for the 2018 season. Howard did not throw a pass in the last four games of the season as Griggs took control of the job down the stretch, and Jack Abraham (Northwest Mississippi Community College) was added to the QB room in January.

With Griggs out for the spring, Howard did show improvement — especially in taking care of the ball, after turnovers had plagued him during his first two seasons on campus.

LSU TE Jamal Pettigrew out for the season with an ACL. Moreau is the top guy but the OC has mentioned flexing to empty or 4 wide sets in 12 personnel to take advantage of matchups. Pettigrew was a 6’6-6’7 target that could have created some problems.

Drove the getaway car in multiple pawn shop robberies, which involved guns being stolen, in Georgia back in January. He was arrested in May but it just started to leak out so they had to make a move. He is suspended indefinitely.

He was the #3 ILB and would have been first off the bench in the rotation. He looked decent in a few starts last year. Not a major impact at the moment but could be an issue if one of the starters (White/Phillips) is injured.

and the NCAA sucks

The Kristian Fulton situation is bullshit

I cannot believe how long this kid has to sit

Sounds like a Fulmer Cup nominee.

Fulton’s situation isn’t bullshit, that’s why it hasn’t gained any traction outside of Baton Rouge. He clearly broke the rule and the clearly outlined penalty was handed down.

I disagree

other kids sit for way less time for more serious violations

Justin McMillian and Lowell Narcisse absent from LSU’s practice today, speculation is they will transfer. Orgeron’s next availability is tomorrow night, so confirmation likely at that time. Rumor is the QBs were notified of the pecking order going forward...Burrow, Brennan, McMillian, Narcisse...so it makes sense.

McMillian graduated this Summer and can play immediately if he finds a D1 Lansing spot, Narcisse is likely going to juco.

This leaves LSU with two scholarship QBs.

Probably so, but the rule is the rule and the penalty is the penalty. If they disagreed they should have brought it up before it impacted one of their players.

LSU seems like a disaster right now
Well, not at QB lol. I'd take 1 year of competency( likely 2, depending )

It is more so the state of being a highly rated D 1 QB coming out.....these kids ain't waiting

I would have to think they are telling McMillan he is an injury away and Myles takes a RS

But who knows

Not just this, the program in general. It feels like it's on it's way down, compared to Arky, Florida, Texas A&M, Tennessee on their way up. Ya'll need a new a coach. You're a QB injury away from being in trouble.

I won't argue with the coach, but let's see what happens this year and after this class comin in

LB Chris Allen out for season for Alabama. Curse at LB continues.

Drake Davis' bitch has now recanted her statement and giving a false report it seems.....

could be Jalen Mills all over again

Air Force starting FS James Jones tore his ACL (9 starts, #5 tklr '17). They are moving CB Jeremy Fejedelem to FS so he has to learn a new position less than 2 weeks before the season starts. Right now Zane Lewis is listed at the other CB spot opposite Robert Bullard (neither were primary CB starters in the 2017 secondary).

Washington 3 year seldom used reserve DT Ricky McCoy granted immediate eligibility waiver after transferring to Fresno St earlier this year.

Fresno had a 6-man interior DT rotation in 2017. With Forrester and Madsen gone, the new interior starters Atkins and Haynes should be fine, but Fresno's preferred DL rotation was in question with less experienced depth beyond reserves Iakopo and Belony. At the very least McCoy gives them another older player to get into the system and plug in for a 5-man rotation without having to rely on undersized and unproven youth.

Kent State OL Adam Gregoire torn meniscus will miss season, started 6 last season. 21 career games made him the most experienced OL for the Flashes.

Bowling Green Sr DE David Konowalski torn achilles. 24 career starts. 56 tkl, 3.5 sacks, 5 tfl, 6 qbh 2017.

Kentucky projected starting LT Landon Young suffered season ending knee injury. Young started 9 games, appeared in 24 over the last 2 years.

UK OL coach is also missing some time with undisclosed illness.

DE Josh Paschal is out being diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Paschal had 3.5 sacks as a freshman last year.
